When is Labor Day celebrated?
International Workers’ Day or Labor Day is celebrated by almost 80 countries every year on May 1 to celebrate the efforts of all kinds of workers and labor unions around the world.
History of Labor Day: Why is Labor Day celebrated?
The roots of Labor Day lie in the Heymarket riot or Heymarket incident that happened in 1886 in Chicago, USA, when thousands of workers came onto the streets to demand an eight-hour workday. The protest started on May 1, also known as May Day. It was supposed to be a peaceful protest which later turned into a disaster. A bomb was set off on the 4th day of protest, which caused several casualties.
A few years later, in Paris, the Heymarket incident inspired a gathering of international socialists, and to honor the workers’ rights, they announced a holiday on May Day, which is now known as International Workers’ Day. Year after year, more and more countries kept joining the cause, and now it is celebrated by almost 80 countries.
